Why cheap does not equal good value

no to cheap face painter melbournePicture this. You’ve hired an electrician to rewire your house. He’s doing it for cheap because he’s a friend of a friend. After a couple of last-minute cancellations, he finally turns up (late) to your house. It’s only now that you discover that he doesn’t know how to complete the tasks involved, and has to keep googling instructions. He’s never picked up the required tools before, doesn’t have the right equipment on hand, and keeps asking you if you have any of the tools he needs to complete the job. He’s not insured, and you suspect he’s not even qualified. But he’s having a go at it anyway!

Would you be happy? I know I wouldn’t. No matter how low the price, I’d be pretty nervous letting an amateur near something so important to me.

So why do we feel differently about face painters and body artists?

As a person that paints people, we are applying “stuff” directly onto vulnerable skin. If this isn’t done with the right “stuff,” or in the right way, it can cause some serious health problems. Isn’t that important? I think that the safety, health and well-being of our kids’ faces and our own bodies is too important to take a gamble on, or to compromise for the sake of a bargain. That’s why it’s important to find a reputable, qualified, experienced professional who really knows what they’re doing. A cheap face painter might just cost you more than you bargained for.

What do you get for your money when hiring a professional?

Cheap face painters don’t have the skill, experience, or quality products to do what professionals can. When you hire an experienced professional, you’re getting so much more than someone just playing with paint. You’re getting:

  • Professional skin-safe cosmetic grade products – not cheap art supplies that can be seriously hazardous. “Non-toxic” is NOT the same as cosmetic grade and we know the difference. Professionals have invested lots of time and money into finding the best quality, safest products available. This goes for glitter too!
  • Clean, sanitised equipment – because it’s worth putting time into cleaning our kits for your safety.
  • Hygienic application methods – we spend more on sponges, product, cleansers and wipes for your health, and we know how to use them in a way that minimises the spreading of germs and nasties.
  • We bring everything we need – from high chairs and tables right down to stencils that match your theme, to make it easier and stress-free for the people that hire us.
  • Reliability – although it’s all about fun, we take our job seriously and you can bet your bottom dollar that we’ll turn up when we promise to. Cheap face painters often cancel at the last minute because a better offer comes along, or because the amount you agreed to pay doesn’t seem as enticing right now as the beach does on this glorious sunny Saturday morning. I’ve had countless panicked phone calls from stressed mums who tell me that their cheap face painter cancelled at the last minute, and ask if I could help out on short notice. We are inevitably booked out at this point and there’s nothing we can do. It’s heartbreaking.
  • Responsive service – because your business is our priority, when you email us we respond ASAP. We never leave you hanging for days for an answer!
  • Current police checks – for your peace of mind we pay to keep our Working With Children Cards up to date.
  • Current insurances – so that if the unthinkable happens, we are all covered.
  • Thousands of hours of practice – so that the quality and speed of our work makes everyone our brushes touch feel like a million bucks, and you get the best value for the time we spend with you.
  • Hundreds of hours of professional experience – so we know how to handle ourselves if issues arise beyond our control. Or even better, we know what to look out for at events to minimise or eradicate issues before they happen, and to maximise our output so that you get better value out of us and a better experience overall.
  • Hundreds of hours of training – not only to improve our skills, techniques and trade-specific knowledge, but also in customer service, business, and even emergencies so that we can offer you the best all-round service possible.
  • Memberships and accreditation with associations that test our skills and hold us accountable to their codes of practice and codes of ethics.

Were any of these things on your mind when you started looking for a face painter? Did you assume that every face painter would provide all of these things as given? Well here’s the thing – all of these super important elements to providing a great, safe service and a fabulous experience cost a lot of money to implement and maintain. Cheap face painters literally can’t afford to include all of these essentials in their service to you, and so they ignore them and charge less in the hope that a low price will convince you to keep ignoring them too. But professional face painters choose to honour their duty of care towards their customers, and this increases their costs dramatically. So while you might think “Why does it cost so much? It’s just face painting!” it really isn’t just face painting at all. We are investing in our businesses and in ourselves so that our customers get the best experience possible.

So if you’re in the market for a cheap face painter or body painter, think of them as you do your hairdresser, your beautician, or even your mechanic! If I turned up to an appointment with a new hairdresser and they were using kiddies craft scissors that hadn’t been sanitised, their work station was a mess, their products were all home-brand (and some not intended for use on hair at all), and they’d only ever cut hair once or twice before, I would turn around and NOPE right out of there! And so should you. You should expect a certain level of safe, skilled service, and choose the service provider you want because you know that at the end of the day they’ll do their job well, everyone will have fun, and nobody gets hurt. You should choose an expert, not an amateur. Base your decision on how well someone will do their job, not on who can offer you the cheapest price.

I’m proud to say that I’m not a cheap face painter, but I am so worth the price for my level of skill and care. Because I’ve invested heavily in making myself the best face and body painter I can be. Because I know that spending less is not the same as getting the best value.

So how do I know I’m getting the real deal when hiring a face painter?

I know it can be really REALLY hard to know the difference between a professional face painter and an amateur at first. Price is often a good indicator of quality, but there are some amateur face painters out there that are clever enough to realise that with enough confidence you can charge just as much as professional face painters, and nobody will notice until the deal is done. That’s why I put together this handy guide for parents and customers who are trying to choose a face painter. I hope it helps you find the right person for the job, that will fulfill your expectations and more!
